Progesterone is the ‘other female hormone’ produced in the ovaries. It is often overshadowed or forgotten due to the superstar status of estrogen, but it is equally as important!
WHAT IS ESTROGEN?
Estrogen is a hormone that is primarily secreted by the ovaries. It has many functions in the body, and is most well known for its effects on vaginal, uterine, and breast tissues. Interestingly, estrogen also helps to protect the cardiovascular system from cardiovascular disease and stroke, bones from osteoporosis, and the brain from memory disorders like dementia.
PREMENOPAUSAL ESTROGEN
During the pre-menopausal stage of a woman's life, difficulties with estrogen often manifest as endometrial hyperplasia and excessive menstrual bleeding, uterine fibroids, anxiety and mood swings, headaches, fibromyalgia, and fluid retention. This is most often due to an imbalance with progesterone, and can be corrected through supplements, medications, and potentially surgical procedures.
POSTMENOPAUSAL ESTROGEN
During the post-menopausal stage, estrogen deficiency occurs as ovarian production declines/ceases, or if ovaries are removed during a hysterectomy. Deficiency of estrogen can cause symptoms of vaginal atrophy and dryness, painful intercourse, hot flashes, urinary incontinence, sagging skin and wrinkles, fatigue, depression, mood swings, and decreased libido.
