What are the signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalance?

Around 80 percent of women in the United States alone suffer from some kind of hormonal imbalance.  Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has proven to be one of the most useful methods.  The fast pace and stressful nature of life has resulted in an increase in the rate of hormonal imbalances, especially among women. Even a slight imbalance of hormones can have a big impact on the health and wellbeing of a person, leading to varying health issues.

Here are a few symptoms that could signal a hormonal imbalance:

Insomnia/trouble sleeping Lower sex drive/low libido Hot flashes/night sweats
Irregular periods (skipped, closer together or further apart) Weight gain/inability to lose weight no matter how much you exercise or diet Mood swings/emotional instability
New or worsening headaches/migraines Periods that look like a crime scene/heavy periods Lack of focus or concentration
Brain fog Vaginal dryness Excess belly fat
Unwanted facial hair Hair loss/hair thinning Incontinence
Loss of energy and muscle mass Anxiety or panic attacks Bloating/abdominal cramping
Fatigue Increased skin aging Depression

If you are suffering from any of these common hormonal imbalance symptoms, bioidentical hormone replacement therapies (BHRT) can help. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is also known as natural hormone therapy.  The term bioidentical means the hormones are plant extracts that mimic what your body naturally produces. Delivery methods of these hormones come in several forms, such as pellets, creams, patches, pills and troches.

Bioidentical vs Synthetic Hormones

A Symphony of Balance

In the orchestra of wellness, hormones play a vital role, influencing everything from energy levels to mood. Within the realm of hormone balancing, we illuminate the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones. The main difference between synthetic or synthesized hormones and bioidentical hormones is accuracy. Bioidentical hormones replicate the exact molecular structure of naturally produced hormones (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, etc.), resulting in a hormone that functions far better than synthetic forms. With synthetic hormones, the structure is merely similar therefore causing more side effects and unwanted outcomes. There is often a fear associated with the topic of hormone therapy due to a misguided study from the 90’s. The Women’s Health Initiative led this large study that published the findings of increased risk of blood clots, heart disease, and breast cancer in women taking HRT. However, there was a highly important factor in these findings that was overlooked which was that the recordings were based off only synthetic hormones and led many well-meaning physicians to reduce their HRT prescribing. At Ageless Beauty Rx, we believe in tailoring wellness to your individual needs, creating a harmonious blend that resonates with your body’s natural rhythm.

Understanding Hormones: Progesterone, Estrogen, Testosterone, Thyroid, and DHEA

Navigating the Hormonal Landscape

These essential hormone messengers play pivotal roles in reproductive health, age management, and overall vitality. Our seasoned experts provide nuanced insights into the functions of each hormone, empowering you with knowledge that becomes the cornerstone of personalized hormone balancing plans. Understand the symphony within and embark on a transformative journey to nurture and enhance your inner radiance.

Progesterone:  Progesterone is sometimes thought of as the miracle hormone. It has a calming effect on both the mind and the body and is good for skin health. Progesterone stimulates normal brain processes and helps the nervous system to function properly. Depleted amounts can cause mood swings, headaches, and increased anxiety and/or depression. When taking bioidentical progesterone, women will have an increased protection from breast and uterine cancer as well as osteoporosis, ovarian cysts, and fibrocystic disease.  Progesterone may also reduce the risk of dementia and improve neurological resilience.  We recommend taking your bioidentical Progesterone before bed since it has a sedative effect and can help resume normal sleep cycles.

Estrogen: Estrogen effectively helps with such conditions as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, and bone loss. These benefits can lead to improved sleep, sexual relations, and quality of life. By adding back the lost estrogen, in combination with progesterone therapy, you can help ease the symptoms of menopause and reduce the risk of other diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and many more.

Testosterone:  Testosterone plays a key role in the development and maintenance of muscle mass, strength, energy levels, bone density, skin and hair, promotes cognitive health, and maintains sex drive, improves mood, libido, orgasm, and feeling of well-being. For women in particular, the maintenance of bone density and muscle mass is important, as both of these tend to deteriorate with age.  Aside from the immediate benefits of enhanced skin, hair, mood, and energy, testosterone therapy for women also plays a vital role in overall health and longevity.

Thyroid:  The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system, which is made up of glands that produce, store and release hormones into the bloodstream so the hormones can reach the body’s cells. Your thyroid gland uses iodine from the foods you eat to make two main hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The hypothalamus and the pituitary glands in the brain work together to maintain these levels. When the T3 and T4 hormone levels become too high or too low, your body will develop hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

  • Hyperthyroidism occurs when there is too much T3 and T4 in your system.
  • Hypothyroidism occurs when there is too little T3 and T4 in your system.

The functionality of the thyroid gland will affect your body’s overall wellness. Your thyroid gland is responsible for manufacturing enough thyroid hormone to trigger your cells to perform and function at a certain rate. As a result of treatment, you will see an increase in energy levels and a more stable weight, your other symptoms should improve as well. Your sex drive may improve, you may sleep better, pain in your muscles and joints may go away and your mood may improve.

  • Hashimoto’s Disease is when the immune system attacks the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck (thyroid).  Initially, inflammation of the thyroid causes a leak resulting in excess thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism). Over time, inflammation prevents the thyroid from producing enough hormones (hypothyroidism). Symptoms include fatigue and unexplained weight gain.

DHEA: In women, DHEA is a powerful agent of change, affecting everything from bone density to weight and even libido and sexual function. The production of this precursor hormone typically begins to increase after age 10 before reaching peak production when you’re in your 20’s. From that point on, the amount of DHEA available within the body begins to decrease at a steady rate, which is why DHEA supplements can be highly beneficial for most women. Along with treating health problems like depression and obesity, it’s believed that DHEA can effectively slow the aging process, increase energy, and strengthen the immune system.  DHEA supplements and hormone replacement therapy can be highly beneficial if you’re experiencing any signs of aging. While DHEA will improve symptoms of menopause, there are many additional health benefits that go far beyond the relief from menopausal symptoms.

Replacing diminished hormones with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, such as thyroid, DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in women and men slows the aging process and reduces your risk of age-related chronic diseases, including diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, and heart disease.

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Delivery Methods

Pellets

Pellets are the preferred method of hormone replacement therapy and have grown in popularity over the last decade.  For most people pellets offer a convenience that is unparalleled. Pellets are placed under the skin during a short medical visit and deliver a steady dose of hormone for 3 to 6 months based on your level of cardiac output, gender, and dose.  You don’t have to remember to apply cream or take a pill. This method of delivery also most closely mimics the body’s natural secretion of hormones–delivering timely and steady dosing for optimal function. At Ageless Beauty Rx we use EvexiPEL Pellet Therapy, which is a patented pellet formulation made in one of the country’s leading FDA-registered pharmacies.

Creams and Gels

Creams are a topical form of hormone replacement therapy and available for cyclical progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen therapies. You will receive a custom-compounded cream or gel to apply as directed by your physician to a specific area of the body.  While there are some advantages to creams and gels, there are many risks. The primary side effect reported is outcomes related to transference to a relationship spouse/partner, other family members or pets that you may come into contact with after application.

Patches

Patches are another delivery method that offers convenient application and avoids errors in dosing. This option is available for estrogen therapy. A patch, much like a band-aid, is attached to the skin with the prescribed dose of hormones. The patch stays on the skin for a recommended time period, delivering hormones through the skin until a new patch is required.

The visibility of the patch and the risk of the patch falling off often turns patients away from this method.

Pills

Pills are a familiar form of hormone therapy. Much like many other oral medications, hormone replacement therapy pills are compounded to your prescribed dose and ingested at a specified frequency. Pills are among the most well-studied forms of hormone replacement therapy. Oral hormone therapy is classically prescribed for thyroid disorders and cyclical progesterone therapy.

Troches

A troche is similar to a lozenge. It’s designed to be placed between your cheek and your gums, where the skin lining is very thin. In this position it gradually dissolves, releasing its active ingredients directly into your circulatory system. When your glands produce hormones naturally, they’re released into this same circulatory system, so the troche’s delivery method is very similar. With a troche you bypass the digestive system and the liver, making it a gentler method of delivery than a tablet.

Premenopause, Perimenopause, Menopause and Post Menopause

Guiding You Through Transitions

Transitions through premenopause, perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause are uniquely challenging, both physically and emotionally. At Ageless Beauty Rx, we recognize the importance of personalized care during these transformative phases of life. Our holistic care plans address not only the visible symptoms but also the underlying changes, providing support that goes beyond the surface. Knowing what to expect can make each transition simpler. Let us be your guides, helping you navigate these transitions with confidence, grace, and a focus on your enduring well-being.

Premenopause:  Perimenopause means “around menopause” while premenopause means “before menopause.” However, doctors often use the term perimenopause to refer to the years before menopause. The changes that lead to menopause happen gradually. Estrogen levels start to fluctuate in the years before menopause. In time, there will be disruption in the menstrual cycle, and other changes may follow. Periods may continue for several years before menopause begins. This time is known as perimenopause. Some people call it premenopause, but perimenopause is the standard term within the medical community.

Perimenopause:  Perimenopause is the transition phase into menopause and can begin in some women in their 30s, but often it starts in women ages 45 to 55 according to the National Institute of Aging. Ovulation may become erratic and then stop. The menstrual cycle lengthens, and flow may become irregular before your final period. Symptoms are caused by the changing levels of hormones in the body.

Menopause:  Menopause occurs when the ovaries stop making estrogen and other sex hormones. Menopause can happen in your 40s or 50s, but the average age is 51 in the United States. Menopause can also be triggered by a hysterectomy or surgical removal of the ovaries, which produce hormones. If you have surgery to remove your uterus or ovaries and are not taking hormones, you will experience symptoms of menopause immediately.

Post Menopause:  Post Menopause is a term to describe the time after someone has gone through menopause. When you’re in post menopause, your menstrual period has been gone for longer than 12 consecutive months. At this stage in life, your reproductive years are behind you and you’re no longer ovulating (releasing eggs).
